Position

The Principal, Regulatory Innovation will lead the organization's efforts to advance the transition to a clean and modern grid by helping to enhance current state regulatory processes.  SEPA does not intervene in regulatory proceedings and rather serves as an unbiased facilitator and source of information for public utility commissions, utilities, and other stakeholders. The Principal, Regulatory Innovation will be the public face of SEPA's thought leadership around the evolution of regulatory structures, processes, and outcomes to ensure that innovations in technologies and business models are advanced in an appropriately timely manner.  The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized expert in state regulatory circles and will possess strong external affairs and facilitation skills while also being able to roll up his/her sleeves to dive into the weeds of new regulatory and business models.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to shape SEPA's thought leadership around regulatory innovation. Includes managing regulatory innovation initiatives and representing SEPA's perspective at industry events
  • Identify and research current issues and trends affecting regulatory environment and oversee development of white papers and articles and other educational materials on relevant topics
  • Facilitate meetings and discussion forums to assist with regulatory transformation.
  • Develop, revise, and/or maintain models needed to support analysis of regulatory actions
  • Prepare or assist with preparation of information and briefs on impacts of various regulations and statutory actions on customers either as a result of changes brought on by performance-based regulation, new legislation, or changing ownership models of assets
  • Serve as SEPA's primary liaison with state commissions and NARUC.
  • Identify opportunities for partnership with other NGOs and related organizations that advance SEPA's regulatory innovation objectives
  • Identify and secure funding sources for SEPA around regulatory work (advisory services, regulatory workshops, events, etc)
  • Identify opportunities and assist in project capture for SEPA to support PUCs on efforts related to clean energy and grid modernization
  • Deliver on fee for service regulatory assistance engagements
  • Serve as a mentor for junior members of the team
  • Other tasks as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in the electric power industry, preferably with 5 or more years of experience addressing clean energy and grid modernization issues.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an active participant in state regulatory proceedings.
